Birkat Al Mouz Location

It is in the Al Dakhliya region of Oman at the foothills of Jebel Akhdar and is just two kilometers away from it. Take the highway on the way to Nizwa to reach here. If you are planning to visit Jebel Akhdar, then passing through this village is a must. The distance from Muscat is about 129 kilometers. It will take around 1.5 to 2 hours.

Attractions

Birkat Al Mouz is a great place to explore if you want to see the simple Omani life. This village is famous for its years-old mud-brick fortress with stunning, colorful doors. It contains two different sets of ruins of 2 tribes. One is comparatively bigger than the other. Driving through the village will allow you to enjoy the plantations. The more you enter, you will see thick banana and date palm plants standing in the queue. They make the beauty of the village even more gorgeous.

Climbing up the stairs and reaching the top of any house will give you some extraordinary aerial views of the mountains and plantations of the village. You can get some good clicks from any rooftop of the old delicate and rough ruins. The irrigation system is still pristine here but there’s the uniqueness of this village lies. The Falaj irrigation system of old water channels are still alive in this village listed as one of UNESCO World heritages. History says this system has been prevailing here from 500 AD. whose origination is even more ago, almost 5000 years. This system made the water flow clean. Inside the channels, you may see colorful fishes moving that will be a treat to the eyes.

Exploring the village will help you understand how Omanis managed to live in such a dry condition. Locals are friendly here and they may offer you to show the village surroundings being the guide. As you move through those streets, the cold breeze will blow your mind away and give a heavenly peace.

Some Useful Advice

The suitable time to go to this village is between 8:00 to 11:00 AM when sun rays become moderate. However, you will get several places with trees that will shade you and give comfort while exploring. Roaming the village will require a minimum fitness level since you need to climb and pass through some steep rocky surfaces. Getting a water bottle and wearing a cap is a must as the days are open, the sun rays will be crueler. Taking comfortable hiking shoes is also crucial. This place has no specific parking area. Park anywhere by not blocking the pathway.
